2013 Reserve Kimsey Vineyard Syrah
Aggressive aromas of melted dark chocolate and brambleberry give way to saw dust, freshly ground espresso beans and a hint of cola nut. Gripping tannins on the fore palate are met with a weighty and fruit forward mid palate. Floral and deep earth tones further perplex the palate on the long and seductive finish. This wine is incredibly complex, incredibly young and incredibly f**king good. Go shoot yourself an elk, rip the backstrap off, throw it over a hardwood fire, barely cook it, forage some wild mushrooms and enjoy this wine throughout that entire sequence. The 2013 Kimsey Syrah will easily age for 10+ years and will drink best after being decanted.
Picked on a very cold mid-October morning, the Kimsey Syrah was hand sorted both in the vineyard and at the winery though the quality of the fruit required very little removal of clusters. I included 30% whole clusters into the fermentation and allowed the fruit to cold soak for 5 days to allow as much extraction of color, flavor, and skin tannins as possible. We performed twice daily punchdowns and daily pumpovers to encourage further extraction and promote a healthy fermentation. The fruit was then gently pressed into 62% new French Oak 265 liter barrels and 38% Neutral French Oak Barriques where it spent the next 23 months. *Due to the limited production, we want our highest tiered wine club to enjoy it first. This wine was recently bottled, please keep this in mind before you open. We suggest allowing it to age in bottle for 8-12 months, but if you absolutely cannot wait, please decant i t first
